The conference, also known as the Earth Summit, was a gathering of leaders from around the world to discuss the environment and sustainable development. During the conference, the need for a day to raise awareness about water-related issues was recognized. As a result, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22nd as World Water Day the following year. Since then, World Water Day has been celebrated annually, with a different theme each year. The themes are chosen to focus on a specific aspect of water, such as water scarcity, water pollution, and water and climate change.
Hydr8 believes that World Water Day is an extremely important event because it highlights the need for clean and safe drinking water. The theme of World Water Day in 2021 was “Valuing Water.” It focused on the social, economic, and cultural value of water and aimed to raise awareness about the importance of water as a finite and vulnerable resource. The theme also encouraged individuals and organizations to consider innovative and sustainable ways to manage water resources for the benefit of all. The theme for World Water Day in 2022 was “Groundwater- making the invisible visible.” This theme aimed to raise awareness of the vital role that the hidden water resource plays in our lives and how it is not fully recognizable in sustainable development policymaking. This year’s theme is set to be “Accelerating Change.” In 2023 they are calling all people to take action on solving the water and sanitation crisis. Everyone can make a difference by altering the way you use, consume, and manage water in your life.
